The current game has evolved significantly since the initial banning of
Asmoranomardicadaistinaculdacar. The threat it posed on Turns 2, sometimes even turn 1, which seemed problematic at the time, now corresponds to a standard that has become common in the current environment. It is important to note that
Asmoranomardicadaistinaculdacar was banned very quickly, only three months after its release, so data on its actual impact remains limited.
Additionally,
Asmoranomardicadaistinaculdacar's value generation via Food tokens requires a time investment that allows opponents to develop their own strategies and find appropriate answers. This mechanic, more gradual than other value engines in the metagame, integrates naturally into the current ecosystem. In today's context,
Asmoranomardicadaistinaculdacar's turns 2 cast no longer checks aggressive decks as effectively, and The Underworld Cookbook alone does not appear fast enough to compensate for this weakness. Baral, Chief of Compliance enables, and the game now has a broader arsenal of low-cost removal capable of handling him efficiently. His 1/3 body, once significant, is now more easily overcome by aggressive decks.
We remain mindful of his loot effect, which, while providing a non-negligible selection advantage, no longer seems sufficient to create imbalance in the current environment. In this context, we consider that
Baral, Chief of Compliance can contribute to the emergence of a new archetype without dominating the metagame.

Esior, Wardwing Familiar
The 2022 partner rule change alters the context in which
Esior, Wardwing Familiar operates, reducing his initial impact and making certain formerly oppressive combinations less problematic. Furthermore, his pseudo-ward ability, previously restrictive, is now much easier to bypass thanks to the current toolkit: effects like
Portable Hole or enter the battlefield from creatures.
Esior, Wardwing Familiar has notable limitations: it offers neither card advantage nor card selection, and its impact depends heavily on support from the 99. As a result, compared to many current commanders,
Esior, Wardwing Familiar proves far less autonomous and much less oppressive than in the past.
For these reasons,
Esior, Wardwing Familiar is now legal as a commander.
Rofellos, Llanowar Emissary
Rofellos, Llanowar Emissary never had the opportunity to fully develop in Duel Commander.
While
Rofellos, Llanowar Emissary allows “cheating” threats onto the battlefield through mana acceleration, it nevertheless provides more windows of interaction than other decks pursuing similar objectives, notably reanimation strategies.
Furthermore, builds around
Rofellos, Llanowar Emissary are naturally constrained: the requirement to include enought Forests and maintain a delicate balance between payoff and enabler limits its consistency and explosiveness, tempering its potential for domination. The evolution of threats and answers available in the current metagame thus allows
Rofellos, Llanowar Emissary to find a place without creating major imbalance.
We want to give it a chance in the current ecosystem to assess its real impact.

Loyal Retainers
The current Duel Commander environment has developed numerous effective interaction tools against reanimation strategies. The higher cost of
Loyal Retainers compared to similar effects, combined with the increased ease of interaction available in the game, allows this card to regain a place without creating major balance issues.
Players now have a broader and more accessible arsenal to counter this type of strategy, making
Loyal Retainers less oppressive than it could have been in a less developed environment.
Including
Loyal Retainers in Duel Commander inevitably requires more deliberate deckbuilding choices due to the restriction on legendary creatures. To maximize its potential, the deck must dedicate slots to meaningful legendary targets, which in turn reduces flexibility in other areas of play. This constraint pushes the build toward specific synergies rather than serving as a source of generic value, ultimately limiting both the diversity of game lines and the freedom of composition.
For these reasons,
Loyal Retainers is now legal in Duel Commander.
